should illegal immigrants get drivers' licenses? the california legislature just passed a bill - and sent it to the terminator - to do just that! arnold is free to sign the bill (thus making it law) or vetoing the bill - thus making it not law. since the legislature is out of business for the year, they will have a very hard time overturning his veto and making the bill into law over his veto (a 2/3 vote of the whole legislature is needed to do that, and the democrats who passed this bill don't have the 2/3 anyway). if people are here illegally, should they be given public acknowlegement that it's ok to be here - with a drivers' license?????? whaddayathink???

This is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it gives people who are here illegally a right to drive a car. Well, okay, since they're here illegally and driving illegally and uninsured, this would supposedly be a way to keep better track of who enters the country -IF you wish to believe that. But for citizens, being granted a drivers licence is also combined with voter registration. Therefore, I would think this is only phase one of granting illegal immigrants the right to vote at some point in the future. Now granted, this country was founded and advanced on the blood, sweat and tears of immigrants - but there is a right way and a wrong way to immigrate to this great nation of ours. Running, crawling, cutting trhough fences and swimming across borders under the cover of darkness or being smuggled in the hidden compartment of a pickup truck is not the way to be a good neighbor or ultimately - a citizen of the U.S. Therefore, i would have to say that for the most part, I am a long way from wanting to see illegal immigrants being given drivers licences - no matter wht the reason we are being offered by Sacramento.
I'm an immigrant to this country, so I understand what its like to be displaced and then stripped of power.However, I would disagree to this. Allowing illegal immigrants to run around with no insurance is a bad idea. Its not only dangerous, but an economic risk if they don't get insurance even at higher rates.
You know what, even as an immigrant, I wouldn't mind working and paying higher taxes if it means earning some sort of privliges. Such as being able to drive if i wanted to, but the KEY here is Illegal Immigrants, those who don't have enough respect for the process...they don't deserve to be licenced.
